Lincoln Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Steve Joel is expected to announce his retirement at Tuesday night’s school board meeting. It’s a surprise announcement from Joel, who has led LPS for the past 11 years and has helped the district navigate several difficult years during the COVID pandemic. Joel is expected to make his decision official and will finish his 37-year career at the end of the current school year. He joined LPS in 2010 after serving as the superintendent of Grand Island Public Schools. The school board is expected to accept Joel’s retirement and take the first steps in a national search for his replacement, which could take five to eight months. Joel, 66, has also spent time in Beatrice and Kansas during his education career.
