Nebraskans who want to honor a favorite teacher can do it by donating to help rehabilitate a fountain in central Lincoln. The Lincoln Parks Foundation is raising money to update the Cascade fountain, which was built for America’s bicentennial and sits at 27th and Capitol Parkway.
People who donate to the fountain’s rehabilitation can name a teacher to be honored with a brick in the plaza. The fountain was originally built to honor Nebraska’s teachers.
Maggie Stuckey is executive director of the Lincoln Parks Foundation. She said the foundation wants to make the fountain a destination.
“It could add another place to visit when you’re on the antelope park triangle," Stuckey said. "The Sunken Gardens and the Hamann rose garden are right there. We’re really excited to add another destination in that area, and just really improve what the experience is at the fountain."
The fountain is in need of updates to purify the water, put in new lighting, and modernize the mechanical and electrical systems. The plaza around the fountain will also be updated. The total fundraising goal is 1.6 million dollars.
