One of Lincoln’s largest farmers markets will delay reopening until at least May 16 as the city faces increased cases of COVID-19. The farmers market in Iron Horse Park in the Haymarket District had planned to open this Saturday, but after discussions with local health officials, will delay it at least a week.
“This is all day-by-day. I just depends on how many new cases are being reported and things like that,” Jeff Cunningham with Haymarket Development Corp. said. “We’re working closely with the health department just to make sure we’re all on the same page and what they’re comfortable with and when to start.”
Usually, more than 100 vendors operate at the farmer’s market, although only around 35 had committed to opening this coming weekend.
“We’ve just got to try to do what we can do to make the market safe for everybody,” Cunningham said. “We’re going to have signage on the rules we need our customers to follow.”
Cunningham says when the Farmer’s Market does reopen, vendors and customers will have to follow social distancing rules, including not touching the merchandise and standing at least six feet apart.
