Lincoln City Council approved an ordinance change Monday which now allows bars to open sidewalk cafes. The change passed by a vote of 7-0.
Previous regulations required establishments to derive 60 percent of their sales from food to open a sidewalk café. That stipulation is now removed and any bar or restaurant can open an outdoor café on public sidewalks, with an approved license from the city.
Sidewalk cafes are popular in numerous cities and were supported in the public hearing last week by all six speakers.
The ordinance change was proposed on August 2 by Council Chair James Bowers. A public hearing was held last week on August 9.
