Letter Carriers Aim to "Stamp Out Hunger"

Those in Omaha and elsewhere in Nebraska can leave food items at their mailboxes on Saturday, May 11 to help fight food insecurity in Nebraska.

United Way and the Nebraska Center for Workplace Development and Education partnered for the 27th annual Letter Carriers’ “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive. Letter carriers will provide bags to participants, which residents can fill with nonperishable food items and place near mailboxes for pickup. Nationally, 1.67 billion pounds of food has been donated. 263,069 pounds of food was donated in Omaha's 2018 event.

Jesse Baughman, letter carrier and event organizer, said this event is a major help to local food pantries and homeless shelters.

“This is a positive thing and it strengthens our community when we do these things for each other," Baughman said. "It’s the community helping the community and in my eyes, that’s the right way to do things. So, when we can just take a little bit of kindness from our hearts and help out those that are little bit unfortunate or maybe just put in a tough position at the time and be able to help those people, it just makes a huge impact on their lives and gives us a good feeling in our hearts.”

Participants can also drop off food items at their local post office on the morning of May 11. For more information on food insecurity in Nebraska, read this story.
