Kearney residents voted to move forward with plans to build a sports complex this month. The $34 million facility could open as soon as the summer of next year.

Roger Jasnoch, director of the Kearney Visitors Bureau, said it would diversify the city’s entertainment options.

“If you can kick it, throw it, shoot it, or pass it, you’re going to be able to do that in this new building,” Jasnoch said. “And we’re excited about bringing that to Kearney for the people that live here for entertainment, sports options, but likewise to be able to attract larger and bigger tournaments to Kearney.”

A 1% restaurant sales tax will help fund the project. Other nearby businesses will put up half of the $34 million cost through state tourism tax incentives.
