Farmers, ranchers, and other people interested in issues facing Nebraska agriculture are being invited to attend the Governor's Ag Conference in Kearney March 4th and 5th. Governor Dave Heineman says the theme of this year's conference is "Nebraska agriculture in an era of change."

Speakers will address topics including how changes at the national level could affect Nebraska farms and ranches. Agriculture director Greg Ibach said while the industry is not immune from general economic conditions, it does have certain advantages:

"I think anytime there's an economic challenge it influences consumers purchasing habits," Ibach said. "But for the most part, People need to eat every day. And what we produce in agriculture is food, and feed for animals that are also destined to become part of the consumption cycle."

Ibach adds that Nebraska's relatively good financial picture may help at a time when other states are cutting ag promotion activities.

"I think a lot of other states are facing financial crisis and they're not going to be out there talking about what they have to offer," Ibach said. "I think we have indications yet from the governor that we're going to be out there talking about Nebraska and Nebraska agriculture, and hoping that when those foreign countries make their purchases, they're going to be looking to Nebraska agriculture to supply their needs"

Conference registration costs $75. Registration information is available here, or by calling 1-800-831-0550
