The Nebraska football team is getting ready for its Las Vegas Bowl matchup against Utah with new assistant coaches in the program. Changes have come at defensive coordinator and at the line of scrimmage.

Following two lopsided losses in November, defensive coordinator John Butler was fired. Associate head coach Phil Snow will take on the interim role for the Las Vegas Bowl.

There’s a new energy for the defense, junior defensive lineman Cam Lenhardt said on Sunday.

“We just simplified it now, so it just gives us the freedom to play fast,” Lenhardt said.

Rob Aurich, who led the San Diego State defense this season, will fill the permanent defensive coordinator role after the bowl game.

Shortly after Butler was dismissed, offensive line coach Donovan Raiola was let go.

New offensive line coach Geep Wade is coaching during bowl prep. Head coach Matt Rhule said he’s hitting the ground running for a unit dealing with lots of injuries.

“We’re, in terms of numbers, depleted. But it's been a great opportunity for some young guys to get a lot more reps,” Rhule said. “And, I think you see them really stepping up and playing well. I think the guys have responded really well to Geep.”

In the offseason, Rhule said Wade will have more time to introduce new concepts.

Defensive line coach Terry Bradden was also dismissed earlier this month.

Rhule is helping coach defensive linemen during bowl practices. Roy Manning was hired to lead the defensive ends permanently. Manning previously coached alongside Aurich at San Diego State. Former New York Giant Dave Tellofson has been temporarily hired to help coach the D-line during bowl practices as well.

Lonnie Teasley was recently added as the run game coordinator for Rhule’s staff, following multiple years as South Carolina’s offensive line coach.

The 7-5 Huskers will compete with the 10-2 Utah Utes at 2:30 p.m. Central on New Year’s Eve. ESPN will carry the broadcast.
