Nebraska volleyball took the court for the first time Thursday night inside a newly renovated Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The Big Red dominated from start to finish against New Mexico, sweeping the match with set scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-15.

Many season ticket holders in the stands were in new seats, following the reseating process that came with the renovation. Longtime season ticket holder Jennifer Snyder moved about seven rows up, despite paying more money.

Initially, she wasn’t a fan of how reseating went. Ahead of first serve, Snyder said her seats were about in the same spot — but she maintained the process could have been more transparent.

“The seats themselves are not bad, as far as the view,” Snyder said. “I think the process — I still think they could have been a little more honest with what they were doing.”

But the renovations themselves were a success in her view.

“They take the time to do things right, as far as actual renovations,” Snyder said. “It looks great. Hopefully, our home court advantage will still be here. That's all we asked for.”

Putting all of the students together and adding more accessible seating shows a well thought-out plan with the renovations, Snyder said.

About 1,500 seats were added to the most well-attended arena in college volleyball, bringing the capacity to 10,000 people. Snyder also pointed out the new sound system, which was booming through the arena as the match started.

“Everything is new, so we still have to get used to all the energy,” opposite hitter Virginia Adriano said postgame. “The atmosphere was super cool, the lights, the smoke at the beginning. And the fans, obviously, we have more fans now. It’s even better than last year and the years before.”

Head coach Dani Busboom Kelly said it was good to finally play at home. However, the wide margin on the scoreboard made it hard to tell whether the energy was up compared to previous seasons.

“I don’t know if it was much different tonight than a big game,” the second-year coach said. “We’ll see tomorrow night. I expect more energy tomorrow for a ranked team.”

The No. 1 ranked Huskers improved to 5-0 on the season and will face No. 20 Baylor at 7 p.m. Central time Friday night.
