Husker baseball drops resumed game with Ole Miss, moves to elimination game against Arizona State

Husker baseball lost to Ole Miss on Sunday afternoon, 6-3.

Nebraska and the Rebels went into a weather delay around 10:30 p.m. Saturday in Lincoln, with the visitors up by the same score going into the ninth inning. Around midnight, it was announced that the winner's bracket game of the NCAA Regionals would be resumed at noon Central time Sunday.

On Sunday, No. 13 overall seed Nebraska showed plenty of promise. Senior Jalen Worthley struck out three in a row to strand a lead-off walk in the top of the ninth.

At the plate in the bottom of the frame, Joshua Overbeek and Drew Grego singled. The Rebels went to the bullpen. But reliever Hudson Calhoun forced NU into a double play and got the final out two batters later.

On Saturday afternoon, No. 2 regional seed Ole Miss took control of the game from the sixth inning on. That’s when it added all six of its runs. As the regional No. 1 seed, Nebraska is hosting a regional at Haymarket Park in Lincoln for the first time since 2008.

With the wind blowing in for much of Saturday evening, it was another pitcher’s duel early. Junior right-hander Ty Horn allowed zero runs through the first five innings for the Huskers.

On offense, senior transfer outfielder Jett Buck figured into the action again. He hit his second home run of the regional in the bottom of the fourth inning. That gave Nebraska a 1-0 lead.

Ole Miss got to Horn for three runs in the top of the sixth, to make it 3-1 Rebels.

The Big Red faithful came alive in the bottom of the frame. It was the loudest NU fans were so far this weekend. The high volume caused several delays on the Ole Miss side. With runners on first and second and one out, Rebel starting pitcher Taylor Rabe couldn’t hear the pitch call. Head coach Mike Bianco and catcher Austin Fawley stopped the game twice. Rabe eventually wiggled out of the jam to keep the two-run lead.

Ole Miss added two more runs in the seventh and another in the eighth, to expand the lead out to five, 6-1 Rebels.

Pinch hitter Max Buettenback woke the stunned crowd back up, right before the thunderstorm rolled in. The left-handed hitter put a charge into one — blasting a two-run homer over the left field fence. Buettenback’s blast cut the margin down to 6-3, before the game was suspended. Then on Sunday, Ole Miss finished the deal.

In the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, the Big Red took care of business. It defeated No. 4 regional seed South Dakota State, 4-1, to head to the winner’s bracket. The Rebels are now in the so-called driver’s seat at 2-0. Nebraska drops down to the loser's bracket. The Huskers will play an elimination game at 2 p.m. Central against No. 3 regional seed Arizona State. The winner of that game will play again at 7 p.m. against Ole Miss. Nebraska or Arizona State would need to beat the Rebels twice to claim the regional and advance to the super regional round next weekend.
