Housing officials say need for help is "constant"

Paula Rhian is a housing coordinator with the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. Rhian says even though the state has a low foreclosure rate, there are still many people seeking help.

"I think there's a very large need, but it's more of a constant need," she says. "We don't have the big ups and downs that you see on the coasts. So our need has remained pretty much stable. It's always there."

Rhian says it's hard to predict how the recession will affect the need for affordable housing in Nebraska in the future. The department is hosting a workshop tomorrow (Tuesday) for local government officials, nonprofit groups, and others that work with people needing help with housing. The workshop will be broadcast to several sites throughout the state. It covers topics like rehabilitating older homes, converting existing properties into rental units, and applying for financial assistance.
