With the summer travel season almost here and COVID cases down, many Nebraskans are planning trips, in some cases out of the country. Health experts say there are some things you should keep in mind before you travel internationally.

For many who have been stuck at home for more than a year, the idea of a trip to a beach in Mexico or somewhere else sounds good. But that could be risky. Different places have different variants of the virus that could be brought back home. But if you go, make sure you’re fully vaccinated.

“If you’re partially vaccinated, you don’t have the immunity that you need, so always, fully-vaccinated is best. So that means 14-days after your second shot,” Dr. Renuga Vivekanandan, an infectious disease expert with CHI Health and Creighton University said.

She said there are also things to remember when you return from your trip.

“In order for us to protect our community and keep the variants rate low, when you come back from international travel it’s really important, as the CDC has said, to get tested 3-5 days after you come back to Nebraska,” Dr. Vivekanandan said.

A negative COVID test is required no more than three days before you board a plane to get back to the U-S from international travel. Many countries are still on the CDC’s list of “high risk” for COVID transmission.
