The Fonner Park race track in Grand Island has replaced its training track with $80,000 worth of fresh dirt and clay. It has been a months-long process that concluded last week.

Chris Kotulak, the CEO at Fonner Park, said the old clay surface saw better days and the new dirt covering will improve safety.

“It was the time to peel off that top cushion and do some restoration,” Kotulak said. “Now, we feel very confident that the training track is in excellent condition and horsemen and riders know that they can get out on it and train in the morning time without any reservations.”

Kotulak said the restored training area increases and enhances opportunities for riders to keep their horses in shape year-round.

Fonner Park opens its stables to horses and riders on December 15 and racing starts February 19, running through May.
