Nebraska dedicated the Justice Administration Building in Lincoln to Chief Standing Bear Thursday.

Governor Pete Ricketts joined several state leaders to dedicate the Nebraska state office building as the Chief Standing Bear Justice Administration Building. The ribbon cutting ceremony included the unveiling of a mural and the bust of Chief Standing Bear.

The Governor says this dedication is long overdue.

“He is truly one of our greatest heroes here in Nebraska," Ricketts said. "And so it is quite right and appropriate that we dedicate this building, The Administration of Justice, to Chief Standing Bear for all that he did to bring justice to our nation."

Sarah Harris painted the mural that spans the wall at the first main entrance. She explained how close to heart she holds the story of Chief Standing Bear.

“To me it was important to tell the story in a way it could be felt, while still being true to the parts of Ponca history. While digitally painting the mural design, I couldn’t help but feel empathy and sorrow," Harris said.

The bust of Chief Standing Bear stands outside the front doors of the building, sculpted by Benjamin Victor. Members of the Ponca tribe, dressed in traditional clothing, spoke about how proud they are to see the statue so prominently displayed.
