Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen declared a State of Emergency Thursday for the three wildfires across Custer and Dawes counties that have burned around 4,100 acres so far.

Nebraska Emergency Management spokesperson Katrina Cerveny thinks these fires could get worse as winds are expected to be 20-30 mph on Friday.

“That is a concern tomorrow the majority of Nebraska is under that extreme fire danger. Fire officials are just asking people to avoid any kind of activities that would spike a fire,” Cerveny said.

Firefighters and the assisting Lakota and Chinook Helicopters are working to contain the fires.

Cerveny said that the East Table Rock Road and the Lilian fires are 30% contained while the Eureka Valley fire is 70% contained. NEMA said 46 fire departments are helping contain the flames.
