Former University of Nebraska President Ted Carter has resigned as president of The Ohio State University.

The university announced the news Monday, saying Carter had resigned after disclosing “an inappropriate relationship with someone seeking public resources to support her personal business.”

“For personal reasons, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my role as president of The Ohio State University,” Carter said in a statement. “I disclosed to the board of trustees that I made a mistake in allowing inappropriate access to Ohio State leadership.”

Carter had been at Ohio State for just over two years, having started his position in January 2024. Before that move, he had led the University of Nebraska system since 2020.

The former superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy and a vice admiral had a successful tenure at Nebraska, helping to steer the university through the COVID-19 pandemic. He also instituted a two-year tuition freeze and was successful in getting the state Legislature to keep university appropriations at a higher level than what Gov. Jim Pillen had sought.
