The Boyd County Board of Supervisors is holding an emergency meeting Friday after the county’s sheriff and sheriff’s deputies resigned this week.
The board is expected to appoint a sheriff to replace Chuck Wrede. He told local radio station KRBX that he’s been working longer shifts, since he hasn’t been able to find employees to hire. He said low pay and inadequate health insurance benefits were major barriers in finding candidates for deputy positions. He relied on deputies working part time to fill the gaps in the rural county in northern Nebraska.
The county’s former Chief Deputy Cheyenne Doyle, who resigned last year, told News Channel Nebraska that she enjoyed serving the people of Boyd County, but not the individuals on the county board.
The Nebraska State Patrol has committed to helping patrol Boyd County until staffing levels have recovered.
The emergency meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. CT at the Boyd County Courthouse in Butte.
