Nebraska lawmakers banned using electronic cigarettes and vapes indoors under the Nebraska Clean Indoor Air Act this year. The rule will take effect on Saturday and only vape shops are excluded.

Sarah Linden is the founder and CEO of Generation V, a chain of e-cigarette stores in Nebraska and Iowa. She said she’s grateful to have worked with the legislature to exempt vape shops from the amendment.

“We find that smokers have a much easier time quitting smoking and making the switch to vaping if they have flavors that they really enjoy," Linden said. "And so we want it to be able to allow flavor sampling in our stores.”

Thomas Ylioja is the clinical director for health initiatives at National Jewish Health, which operates Nebraska’s helpline for quitting nicotine. He said the new rule could lead to more calls.

“One of the things we know is that as policies change around where and when people are able to use different tobacco products, including vaping products, is that many people start to look for how they might decide to quit,” he said.

Ylioja encourages those who are thinking of quitting to call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for free assistance from their coaches.
