The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska would see tribal lands appropriated by the United States decades ago restored under a bill introduced by Nebraska Congressman Jeff Fortenberry.

In a floor speech to Congress Thursday, Fortenberry said the Winnebago Land Transfer Act would return land in northeast Nebraska that was acquired by the Army Corp of Engineers via eminent domain...

“In 1976, a federal court found that the United States and the Corp lacked the authority to take this land through eminent domain,” said Fortenberry. “It's time to make this right.”

In a press release, Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska Chairwoman Victoria Kitcheyan praised the bipartisan measure, calling the Winnebago people “a step closer to being made whole” as Congress seeks to restore tribal lands.
