A Lincoln City Councilwoman has announced a new diversity and inclusion initiative called "Together, One Lincoln."

Sändra Washington said in the wake of the killing of George Floyd and others, she wanted to take the opportunity to start a conversation about racial inequity in the Lincoln community, with the hope of fostering an environment where everyone feels like they belong.

She said organizations such as the Malone Center and the South Street Temple are stepping up to host conversations about race.

"'Together, One Lincoln' is based on the concepts that conversations can be enlightening and powerful," Washington said. "And 'Together, One Lincoln' focuses on how each person can create a community of racial equity by starting a conversation."

Washington said the city has shared tips on starting these conversations, links to resources, and reading lists curated by local libraries to kickstart efforts in the community.

She said the program aligns with and compliments the Mayor’s equity initiative for a more inclusive Lincoln.
