Students of Central City Public Schools in Central Nebraska will enjoy a brand-new gym that doubles as a community storm shelter. The dome-like structure will serve middle school and high school students for sports and other activities.

Superintendent Jeff Jensen said the gym’s storm features opened up the opportunity for government funding.

“Being able to use this, or utilize, the dual-purpose gymnasium and that of a storm shelter in the gymnasium, it becomes FEMA eligible,” Jensen said, “which means you’re getting a good chunk of that facility paid for by the federal government.”

Jensen said the Federal Emergency Management Agency will support 70% of the gym’s cost. It’s the first high school in Nebraska to get funding from the agency for a gym. It’s expected to open in Fall 2022.
