Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon said the U.S. military is in a strong position to respond to Iranian retaliation following President Donald Trump’s decision to attack the country.

In a press call Monday afternoon, Bacon praised Trump’s leadership.

“I think the President did right by defending our country,” he said. “It was a one-night strike. I don't think he wants to do this again unless there's evidence that these strikes were not effective, and then maybe you'll have to reconsider, but I know he doesn't want to have a prolonged fight with Iran.”

Following the U.S. bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities, Iran launched missiles at a U.S. Air Base in Qatar. Reports indicate that all but one of the missiles were intercepted and the other didn’t cause any casualties.

Monday night, Trump said that Israel and Iran had agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire.”

Bacon said he believes the missile strikes were an attempt to save face by the Iranian military and said the nation’s capabilities are depleted following weeks of fighting with the U.S. and Israel.

“Iran has much more to lose if they want to pick a fight with America,” Bacon said. “They have so many more targets that we can hold at risk than they can with us. But to do that, the President would have to come to Congress under War Powers resolution, and I would support it.”

Bacon said Trump’s previous decisions have fallen well within the War Powers Act, which limits the president’s ability to engage the military without congressional approval.

Both of Nebraska’s senators also weighed in on Monday’s Iranian attacks on the U.S. Air Base.

“I am praying for the safety and security of America’s military personnel in the Middle East,” Sen. Pete Ricketts said in statement for the press. “Initial reports are concluding zero casualties as a result of Iran’s missiles targeted at American military. Iran should come to the negotiating table with President Trump to put an end to its goal of obtaining a nuclear weapon. The goal should be peace in the region.”

Sen. Deb Fischer echoed a similar sentiment in a post on X.

“While no casualties have been reported from Iran’s attack on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, I am continuing to pray for our troops and personnel in the Middle East. Iran must end its nuclear enrichment program and return to the negotiating table — peace in the region depends on it.”
