To celebrate its 50th anniversary, an official from the Lincoln-based Arbor Day Foundation rang the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday morning.
The foundation's CEO, Dan Lambe, was invited to ring the bell that starts the trading day.
The foundation is the largest non-profit organization that is dedicated to planting trees. Lambe pointed out that more and more corporations are planting trees to help reach climate and sustainability goals.
The group has planted almost 500 million trees in more than 50 countries since it was founded in 1972.
This Friday also marks the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day, which was started by Julius Sterling Morton in Nebraska City in April 1872.
