Burwell High School has announced it will cancel its boys varsity basketball season.
Burwell head coach and principal Adam Stolzer told Nebraska Public Media the Longhorns will field a Junior Varsity team.
Stolzer and superintendent Dale Maynard sent a letter to Burwell High School stakeholders about the cancellation earlier this week, citing low participation numbers.
The coach said the decision is temporary and Burwell feels good about participation at the Junior High level.
Burwell is at least the fifth Nebraska high school this year to cancel all or part of a varsity schedule in football or girls’ or boys’ basketball.
