Husker baseball and softball fans may soon be able to enjoy alcoholic drinks at games in Haymarket Park.
The Nebraska Board of Regents is set to review a request to permit alcohol sales at the park during their next meeting on April 19, according to the meeting agenda.
University of Nebraska Interim President Chris Kabourek recommended the regents approve the request.
Kabourek started as interim president in January. This action with new Husker Athletic Director Troy Dannen is among the pair’s first in their roles. Dannen started his position in late March.
Kabourek and Dannen reached an agreement with NEBCO, the joint owner of Haymarket park, to reinvest revenue from alcohol sales into the stadium for improvements.
“This is a win for our fans, Husker Athletics and the University of Nebraska,” Dannen said in a statement. “Not only does this added fan amenity bring Nebraska in line with national trends, but it gives us an opportunity to make much-needed investments that will make our facilities more competitive.”
Alcohol sales are becoming more common at college sporting events. As of November, 55 out of 69 Power Five conference schools sell alcohol in their stadiums on game days.
Alcohol has been permitted at Husker Basketball games at Pinnacle Bank Arena, Volleyball Day and the Big Ten wrestling championships.
If the regents approve the request, alcohol sales would be permitted effective immediately.
