Sept. 21 Online Event Explores Medical, Agricultural Benefits of Cannabis

LINCOLN, Neb. (Sept. 10, 2021) – As cannabis becomes more prevalent across the US, the medical field and various industries are exploring the possibilities offered by this ancient crop. But as we move towards broader social acceptance, we should explore what we know about this plant including its medical and agricultural possibilities and the history of cannabis laws and why they have disproportionately impacted communities of color.

Join Nebraska Public Media and NOVA for a live-streamed event, “Cannabis in Nebraska: Medicine, Agriculture & the Law,” at 6 p.m. CT, Tuesday, Sept. 21. Learn more and register to watch at NebraskaPublicMedia.org/cannabis. The event will include a screening of clips from the upcoming NOVA film The Cannabis Question followed by a panel discussion featuring experts in neuroscience, chemistry, and law.

The cannabis plant is used as a recreational and medicinal drug. Cannabis-based products come from the dried flowering buds, leaves, stems, and seeds of the Cannabis sativa (hemp) plant.

The panel discussion will explore what is known about this plant, including the latest evidence of the plant’s potential medical benefits, risks to the developing brain, the benefits and challenges of cannabis in the agricultural community, and cannabis law.

Panelists include:

Sarah Holt, Writer, Producer, and Director, The Cannabis Question

Dr. Kelly Dineen, Associate Professor of Law and Director of the Health Law Program at Creighton University

Dr. Andrea Holmes, Professor of Chemistry and Director of Cannabis Studies at Doane University

Dr. Yasmin Hurd, Ward-Coleman Chair of Translational Neuroscience and Director of the Addiction Institute, Mount Sinai

Dennis Kellogg, Nebraska Public Media News Director, will moderate the discussion.
