NET’s Brandon McDermott Wins Personal Finance Reporting Award

LINCOLN, Neb. (Oct. 21, 2020) – Brandon McDermott, local host of NPR’s “Morning Edition” and news reporter at NET, Nebraska’s PBS & NPR Stations, received a national award from the Radio Television Digital News Association and National Endowment for Financial Education.

McDermott was honored with the 2020 Personal Finance Reporting Award for his “Nebraska Schools Tackle Financial Literacy” radio news story.

McDermott reported that schools in Nebraska are trying different ways to educate students about financial literacy. According to the Nebraska Council on Economic Education, about 60 percent of Nebraska students get mandatory lessons on managing personal finances. The state ranks in the middle of the pack when it comes to financial literacy nationally.

The national award was presented as part of RTDNA and NEFE’s ongoing efforts to encourage radio, television and online news outlets to report on personal finance issues.

The National Endowment for Financial Education provides financial education and practical information to people at all financial stages.

RTDNA is the world's largest professional organization devoted exclusively to broadcast and digital journalism.
