Nebraska Public Media, Partners Recognized with Regional Murrow Awards

LINCOLN, Neb. (June 3, 2025) – Nebraska Public Media content partnerships earned two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association.

The awards are among the most prestigious in broadcast and digital news and are given to honor outstanding achievements in electronic journalism.

“Running Towards the Fire: A War Correspondent’s Story" received an award for television small market in the news documentary category.

The documentary tells the story of journalist Robert Reuben who at age 25 was working as a Reuters News correspondent witnessing the invasion of Normandy during WWII. Journalist Barney McCoy researched Reuben’s story for the television documentary that premiered on Nebraska Public Media in May 2024 and was produced with support from the station. McCoy is a professor in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The radio story "Schwan's delivery trucks are an American icon. But layoffs and a new name may shake that image" was produced by Harvest Public Media and Nebraska Public Media’s former reporter Elizabeth Rembert. It received an award for large market in feature reporting.

The feature story reported on Schwan’s yellow trucks and friendly drivers delivering frozen food to households since 1952. However, the industry has become more competitive and crowded, and the company has responded, rebranding and halting deliveries in most states, according to the story.

The two productions competed in the region that includes Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Iowa, and will now compete for the national Murrow Awards to be announced later this summer.

The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of electronic journalism.
