Nebraska Public Media Wins Two Regional Murrow Awards

LINCOLN, Neb. (June 9, 2026) – Nebraska Public Media recently earned two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association.

The awards are among the most prestigious in broadcast and digital news and are given to honor outstanding achievements in electronic journalism.

Nebraska Public Media received a Murrow Award in the radio large market category for the news story “A Nebraska boy was bullied and called a ‘cotton picker.’ His mother is demanding accountability.”.

Written in collaboration with the Midwest Newsroom, the investigation examines the racism and physical abuse suffered by a Black elementary school student from Falls City and his mother's ongoing fight for accountability through state and federal civil rights complaints.

The “Nebraska Stories” episode “Rescuing Japanese Hall” was honored with a Murrow Award in the television small market category.

“Nebraska Stories,” Nebraska Public Media’s local storytelling series, documented the effort to preserve Scottsbluff's Japanese Hall, a 1928 cultural and social hub for Nebraska’s Japanese American community. The program weaves together the hall’s relocation and restoration with the story of Father Hiram Kano, an Issei pioneer who survived World War II internment before becoming an Episcopal priest and U.S. citizen.

The competition’s region includes Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Iowa. These winners will now compete for national Murrow Awards to be announced this August.

The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of electronic journalism.
