‘Backyard Farmer’ Visits Norfolk on June 7

LINCOLN, Neb. (May 24, 2022) – “Backyard Farmer” – a perennial favorite on Nebraska Public Media celebrating its 70th season – is going on the road to record a special program Tuesday, June 7, at Northeast Community College, 801 E. Benjamin Ave., in Norfolk.

The public is invited to be part of this free, outdoor event near the Lifelong Learning Center with a question-and-answer panel from 5:15-5:45 p.m. and live recording from 6-7 p.m.

Host Kim Todd, Nebraska Extension landscape horticulture specialist, and a panel of Nebraska Extension experts will answer lawn and garden questions. Experts include: Kaitlin Chapman, Nebraska Extension entomologist; Amy Timmerman, Nebraska Extension plant pathologist; Terri James, Nebraska Extension educator and Kelly Feehan, Nebraska Extension Educator – Platte County.

In case of inclement weather, the taping will move indoors to the Northeast Community College Agriculture Complex, 2301 E. Benjamin Ave.

This program will air on television at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 9 on Nebraska Public Media.

The television program will feature connections between Northeast Community College and the Norfolk Farmer’s Market. Segments include one on sisters Stacy and Sandy Dieckman of Norfolk who are passionate about growing and selling fresh local produce to the community; Caleb Nihira and Jody Gibson who got their start selling homemade bread at the market, turning a passionate hobby into a Norfolk business called the North Fork Bread Co.; and Trentee Bush, Northeast Community College horticulture instructor, and her work on an urban farm on campus.

The longest-running, locally-produced, television series in the nation, “Backyard Farmer” airs Thursdays at 7 p.m. through September. It repeats at 10 a.m., on Saturdays on Nebraska Public Media and at 4 p.m. Sundays and 5 p.m. Mondays on Create.

Produced by Nebraska Public Media and Nebraska Extension, Backyard Farmer is supported in part by Campbell’s Nurseries & Garden Centers Inc. and Todd Valley Farms.
