The Verge: Arcade brings video game music to public radio, highlighting its artistic value and emotional storytelling power.

In her spare time, classical radio host Penny Morrow is a gamer. “My dad introduced me to gaming at home on our computer,” she said.

Morrow started playing kids games based on characters like the Power Rangers but grew up with more traditional titles like Halo and Call of Duty. “I liked the music, not what everyone else liked,” she said.

If you think classical music and video games don’t go together, listening to the expansion segment The Verge: Arcade during radio’s The Verge series might change your mind.

“The thing that makes the music feel very exceptional is that it is featured around a story,” said Morrow, who believes music can be an additional character or actor in a game. “The thing that I am trying to share is that you can find beauty and artistry in all forms,” she said.

Listen to The Verge: Arcade on the first Sunday of each month at 7 p.m. CT, during the 6 to 8 p.m. CT broadcast of The Verge on our news/classical channel.
