Public Media Invests in Strong Local Journalism Across Nebraska

April 2025

With deep reporting ties and regional collaborations, Nebraska Public Media remains a trusted source for news in underserved areas.

More than 40,000 people in Nebraska live in counties where there are no local journalists, according to the Nebraska News Map, a year-long project led by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Despite the trend, Nebraska Public Media remains committed to news reporting in communities across the state.

“At a time when other news organizations are closing or shrinking services, we are leaning into the need to keep Nebraskans informed,” said Chief Content Officer Nancy Finken. “When local journalism declines, so does government transparency and civic engagement. It leaves people without the facts they need to make decisions.”

Our award-winning team of reporters has strong Nebraska ties and a powerful commitment to in-depth, trusted journalism. Collaborations with newsrooms in the Midwest strengthen our service.

Harvest Public Media reports on agriculture from farm to table, along with energy and rural life. The Midwest Newsroom is a partnership with four member stations and NPR that provides regional investigative journalism and enterprise reporting with a focus on Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri.

“These partnerships allow us to better research complex issues, offer more perspectives and create more valuable conversations – strengthening the future of local journalism,” said News Director Jay Omar.
