Matt Olberding Leads Nebraska Public Media Newsroom with Experience
October 2025
With deep roots in Nebraska journalism, Olberding is leading efforts to grow statewide news and guide the next generation of reporters.
Just a few months into the job, Nebraska Public Media’s news director is bringing a blend of seasoned leadership and solid journalism experience to the newsroom. Matt Olberding served as interim news director for the network before taking the reins in August.
With nearly 30 years in the newspaper industry, most of those for the Lincoln Journal Star, Olberding spent his career sharpening skills in writing, editing, photography, video, audio and digital storytelling. His experience now fuels the culture in the newsroom he’s leading.
“One of my priorities is to expand local news content in our daily newscasts,” said Olberding. “From breaking news happening in communities across the state to in-depth reporting, our team is working to ensure that Nebraskans are informed about issues that matter to them.”
Olberding is also coaching reporters and producers who are delivering stories that resonate beyond Nebraska, gaining recognition on social media and in other publications. Recent standout features include reporting on Colorado landowners affected by the Perkins Canal, a feature about Nebraska’s top-ranked golf courses and coverage of the drought killing eastern Nebraska’s trees.
Olberding is from Lincoln and graduated with a journalism degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
