The University of Nebraska- Lincoln will follow a modified academic calendar in the fall to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

Classes will begin a week early online, with in-person classes beginning on the originally scheduled date in late August.

The Labor Day holiday and fall break will be cancelled.

Deb Fiddelke, chief communications officer at UNL, says this choice will minimize student travel during the semester.

"We know that one of the biggest drivers of new infections is travelling to an infected place and bringing it back," Fiddelke said. "So this eliminates some of that going home for the weekend or going away for a bit and coming back."

The fall semester will end before Thanksgiving.
